Monte E. Fry

Tribute

Monte passed away March 20 in his home in Boise. Monte was born in Boise on December 19, 1923. He lived as a young boy on a farm in Eagle, Idaho and later moved to Boise where he lived most of his life. He attended Boise High School, and enlisted in the US Navy in May 1943 during World War II. He received a BHS Honorary Degree in n1995 from Idaho Attorney General Alan Lance. He served in the Pacific Area Campaign receiving three medals, participated in the assault on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands, and subsequent defense efforts there. After the war ended, he was honorably discharged on November 28, 1945, and returned to Boise where he worked in the auto repair business. He married soon after the war ended, and was father to three children. In 1950 he became the owner and proprietor of Fry Radiator Shop in Boise and he worked and managed the business until he retired in 1985.

In 1963 he married Doris Ashley Hanna, and they remained married until she passed away in January 2023. He loved to dance to 1940s music, the smell of pipe tobacco, and the taste of Dr. Pepper. Monte will be remembered as a hardworking man who was kind to everyone he met. He enjoyed camping at a Cascade Lake property where a nightly campfire was required so neighbors and family could gather and talk.

Survivors include his son Ron Fry, daughter, Janet Nixon, step-son Mike Hanna, step- daughter Suzanne Gregory, grandsons Scott Richardson, Richard Nixon, granddaughters Lori Evans, Jessica Krueger, and Angela Fry, great grandsons Andrew Evans, Conagher Krueger, Ryker Krueger, great-grand-daughters Madeline Duncan and Ember Krueger, great-great-granddaughters Hailey Duncan, and Hope Duncan. Two daughters-in-law, nine step-grandchildren and their spouses, 16 step-great-grandchildren. Close friend, Keith Gregory, was a tremendous help to Monte in the final months and hours of his life. Monte was preceded in death by his wife Doris Fry, parents Ada and Russel Fry, brother Weldon Fry, son Jim Fry, step-son Rick Hanna, step-son Ron Hanna, step grandson Nathan Hopkins, and former wife Arlee Richardson.
